Do you enjoy listening to music? Do you have many English songs in your music collection? Why not start using these songs to help improve your English language skills?!

In your English language classes, your teacher might sometimes play songs and ask you to answer questions about them. You might think this is a relaxing or fun part of the lesson, but it is actually an excellent method to improve your English.

There have been many professional studies comparing language learning to music and there are, in fact, many similarities.

Firstly, they are two of the main ways in which we communicate and express ourselves. We use the same part of our brain for language and music and it is very common for musical people to also be good at learning languages. Learn English with Music!

Communication can be broken down into 3 categories:

  • verbal language (the actual words we say)
  • body language (eye contact, hand gestures etc.)
  • intonation (the tone of your voice, speed and volume)

Did you know that only 7% of communication involves verbal language? (That’s why it is sometimes extremely difficult to understand what someone means in an email or text message!) 55% of communication is body language and 38% is intonation, the part of language that relates most to music!

How will learning English with Music help me?

Using songs is a really great way to improve your pronunciation and grammar, and you are likely to learn and remember new vocabulary and idioms. 

Pronunciation

Singing along with your favorite English songs will help you to learn how to pronounce English words correctly and will also help to reduce your accent. You will learn more about the rhythm of sentences and how to link your words together when you speak. 

Vocabulary

Listening to music will help you to learn more vocabulary quickly. You are also more likely to remember new words and English expressions if you listen to them in a song than if you read them or learn them in your English class (especially if you sing along!).

Grammar

You might think that grammar needs to be learnt in a very structured way but listening to music will help you to remember grammar patterns and learn how to use grammar correctly in everyday conversation.

How can I improve my English with music?

There are a few different ways that you can use music to help with your English studies. Just listening to music on your iPod while you’re walking to work will probably help to improve your pronunciation, vocabulary and English listening skills, but there are exercises you can do which will help you even more!

  1. Choose an English song with lyrics that you can hear clearly (preferably one that you haven’t heard before). For example, choose songs from artists or bands that you like.
  2. Listen to the song with your eyes closed and try to work out the theme of the song from the lyrics and the expression in the singer’s voice (is the song about love? Has the singer been hurt? Is the singer happy?)
  3. At this stage, you could listen to the song again and write down any words or phrases that you hear (whether you understand them or not).
  4. Find the lyrics online (type the song name and artist into Google and you should be able to find the lyrics easily). Ask a friend to take some of the words out of the lyrics. Then, listen and quiz yourself as you fill in the blanks.
  5. Listen to the song again and read the lyrics at the same time. Did you guess the theme of the song correctly?
  6. Look up any words or phrases you don’t understand in a dictionary and write them down.
  7. Listen to the song a few times while you read the lyrics and when you feel comfortable, start to sing along. This will help you to memorise your new learnt words easier and will improve your pronunciation!
  8. Save the song onto your iPod and listen to it while you are travelling to work or school. The more you listen and sing along, the easier it will be to remember the vocabulary and grammar!

Remember that music is everywhere! Your English textbook is usually only used in the classroom and at home, but music, especially English music, is popular all around the world. You will have endless opportunities for practice.

We connect with music. Whether it be the lyrics or the melody itself, human beings have a natural emotional relationship with music. When something touches our hearts in addition to our heads, it is much easier to remember.

Popular English songs use everyday language. Since English music is usually made for native speakers, songs often use colloquial vocabulary and common expressions and can therefore be a great way to learn natural English conversation.

 

Here are some suggestions to get started:

  • Choose songs from artists or bands that you like. It’ll be easier to establish an emotional connection with such songs.
  • Choose songs that have simple English language. If you look online, there are many websites which can suggest good songs for ESL learning.
  • Listen to the song first and make sure it is not too fast. Pacing is everything in careful listening.
  • Try to find lyrics worksheets online, or make your own! Find lyrics for a song you like and ask a friend to take out some of the words. Then listen and quiz yourself as you fill in the blanks.
  • Sing along with the music! This will help it get stuck in your head and will improve your pronunciation!
  • Have FUN, smile and sing a LOT!

It is important to determine the difference between these two modalities of intervention. Generally anything that is not a negative emotion is a limiting decision. The explanation for the limiting decision is simple; once you say yes to something, you automatically say no to something else and so limit yourself in one way or the other. As we learn in NLP that all resources and guilt are created in the past and anxiety and challenges are created in the future, firstly we need to zoom in on the phenomena of the negative emotions. What to do first?

The first question is, what make people stuck to such negative emotions. Somewhere down the road it must serve a need, make us feel secure and certain about how it serves us. Let’s zoom in on this one.

One thing mostly forgotten while learning is that we experience a lot of emotions and as human nature is trained to stick with something it already knows, failure. It is easy to understand that negative emotions are simply learnings that have the emotion stuck to it. The specific emotion feels so good and so natural that you want to stick to it by thinking it over and over again.

So one of the most important actions for us NLP Practitioners is to guide our client to keep the learning and get rid of the emotion. For example: If you would learn how to recognise a hologram, the fun part is, is that the moment you have learnt to see it, you cannot de-learn it. On the other hand it is pretty funny that this is learning where you do not attach any negative emotion to it. It doesn’t take much time that you store this experience as learning as a resource in your brain and access it whenever needed. Negative Emotions Limiting Decisions.

 

Negative Emotions

Now let’s zoom into a negative emotions and create the tools to get rid of the negativity and only keep the positive learnings from it. First we need to go back in time and get the client associated fully with that moment. Have your client float all the way back on their timeline, all the way back to that specific event and being above that event looking down on that particular event. Ask your client if it is ok for their unconscious mind for them to release this emotion and for them to be aware of it consciously? It is the time now to find the first and earliest event or the first experience of this event ever in their history. Ask what the root-cause is of this problem, the first event which, when disconnected, will cause the problem to disappear?

Ask your client: “If you were to know you do not know, but if you did, take whatever comes up first, trust your unconscious mind now, what is there to have learned from this event, the learning of which will allow you to easily let go of this emotion? As this negative emotion does not protect you, nor protect your body, won’t you be a lot safer if you let go of this emotion and preserve the learnings about taking care of yourself? Won’t it be better to preserve the learnings than the emotions?

If you let go of the emotions and preserve the learnings you will have learned what you needed. Ask your unconscious mind what it needs to learn from the event, the learning of which will allow you to let go of the emotions easily and effortlessly. Your unconscious mind can preserve the learnings so that if you need them in the future, they’ll be there.”

 

Now get some results

Have your client float in the specific event and continue: “Just float right down into the event and notice that the emotion has disappeared. Have a close look, it is totally gone! Now, only at the rate and speed you are comfortable with, I want you to float back again above the event and start noticing that each and every event similar to this one starts to change too, haven’t they? As a matter of fact they already changed, aren’t they? Each and every event totally changed the way you want, didn’t they?”

Now have your client float all the way back above the now. Guide your client: “Now, come back to now, above your timeline only as quickly as you can let go of all the old emotions on the events all the way back to now, with each subsequent event, preserve the learnings, and let go of the old emotions all the way back to now. Float down into now, and come back into the room.” Negative Emotions Limiting Decisions.

As it is time to test now, ask your client: “Can you remember any event in the past where you used to be able to feel that old emotion, and go back and notice if you can feel it, or you may find that you cannot.” Of course it is time here to test your client until your client is totally convinced, that is were we are for, aren’t we? Future Pacing

As the last part we need to future pace the new learnings. Instruct your client: “I want you to go out into the future to an unspecified time in the future which if it had happened in the past, you would have felt an inappropriate or unwarranted old emotion and notice if you can find that old emotion, or you may find that you cannot. Now for the watching-eyes under us, you have noticed that you can utilise trance with this example about handling negative emotions. Also the same is true about handling limiting decisions. The Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo? Please, read this article closely. I promise that there won’t be any loud sounds or nasty tricks, but this blog-post is going to hurt. There’s a study about hyper-sounds and how they cause headaches. These sounds are too high-pitched to hear. Like the one added to reading this blog right now – but cause headaches they still do.

The hyper-sounds are pressing on your inner ear. Stressing the nerves leading to your brain where, if the headache hasn’t started already, it soon will as exposure causes headaches after only ten seconds. Oh my. Can you feel it? That pressure on your ears spreading to your now throbbing brain? Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

Because……you shouldn’t. The study is made up. And there’s no hyper-sound in this blog, but still some of you will have began to feel a headache. Why? The Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo Nocebo Effect

 

What is the Nocebo Effect?

A nocebo is a harmless thing. Like an article with nonexistent hyper-sounds. – Writing to cause harm like a headache because you believe it’s harmful. That sounds like Voodoo. But there’s science behind the nocebo effect, which is more than an irritating parlor trick. It causes real problems like in medicine. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

When testing a new drug doctors get a group of sick people. They give them half of them the new drug and give the other have a fake pill that does nothing. But which they’re told is real. This is how science finds the stuff that works amongst the junk that doesn’t. But new drugs have side effects and sometimes patients drop out of the experiment because of them. But some people on the fake *also* drop out from the side effects. Side effects they’ve gotten from a drug they *aren’t* taking. But because they *think* they’re on the real thing, they’ve also *thought* themselves into the side effects. Now maybe this is just a case of misattribution. People get headaches and, if they’re joined a drug trial that lists headaches in the side effects, it’s natural to blame the new drug. And that certainly happens to some extent. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

 

Attribution or Misattribution?

But the nocebo effects is more than just misattribution. It causes real, additional harm that scientists can measure in cruel, cruel experiments. And this is one of the reasons there not an over abundance of research on nocoboes. Approach your friendly neighbourhood ethics board with an experiment designed to hurt people and they’ll frown on that. But sometimes nocebo experiments do get approved to the benefit of science and humanity, if not the participants. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

For example, under the right conditions some people who expect a harmless injection will give them a rash will get a rash. But for people who expect nothing to happen, nothing is exactly what happens. And fake pills can be additive. Take test subjects off pills they believe are addictive and some will experience nocebic withdrawal symptoms. Like pain and fatigue from the pills that they could never have been addicted to in the first place. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

 

Experiments

Another experiment gave people harmless injections. They told half of them to just sit there and told the other half that their pain would increase for the next thirty minutes. Which it did. But in this situation there is a drug that can block the nocebo effect and those who were told the injection would hurt. But were also secretly given the nocebo blocking drug did *not* report an increase in pain. Showing that the nocebo effect is a real, physical process. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

In all these nocebo experiments it’s the belief in harm that matters. If someone dressed as a voodoo witch doctor popped up and hexed you with a curse of great pain – no effect. But, in a room with a real doctor and his clipboard and a big science machine and a needle in your arm, you’ll take his words rather more seriously. Which is why doctors say: “This won’t hurt a bit” rather than “Oh this? It’s going to hurt. Like a lot! Which, by the way, was a real experiment done on women undergoing labor during spinal injections. Guess how that turned out? Nocebo Effect

But nocebos don’t end here. While illnesses like the flu, spread from contact with disgusting, germ-infected humans and the things they touch with their, disgusting germy hands – a nocebo spreads from mind to mind, no contact required.

 

Once upon a time in a high school …

A notable example happened in a Tennessee high school. One teacher reported a strange smell in her classroom and developed symptoms of headache nausea, and difficulty breathing. These symptoms spread to some of her students and from them to others in the school. Almost two hundred people ended up at the local hospital but all medical tests came back with nothing, nor was anything harmful found at the school. This was a nocebo – the belief that the air was making them sick – spread mind to mind. Everyone who got sick heard about the symptoms from someone else. When this happens, it’s called mass psychogenic illness. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

The treatment in these cases is to separate those with symptoms from the rest and reassure the ill that yes, their symptoms are real. But no they haven’t been exposed to anything toxic. And yes people are getting better quickly. The last is one of the indicators that separates a real poison gas leak or biological weapon from mass psychogenic illness. But the final factor, number of cases increasing with greater media coverage, can lead to this kind of thing spreading far and wide.

 

Electro-Sensitivity

Take, electrosensitives. People who get nausea (among other things) from exposure to parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Notably WiFi density of which is increasing over time, forcing particularly bad sufferers to retreat to places like the creepy-sounding radio science zone in, where else, West Virginia. But put electrosensitives in a room with a WiFi router and they can’t actually tell via their symptoms if it’s on or off. Instead their symptoms track with being told if it’s on or off.  Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

And if you make a group of people without electrosensitivity watch a news report on how Wifi makes you ill while another group watches something uninformative and afterward expose both groups to a fake Wifi signal only some of those who watched the news report feel sick. There’s a similar phenomenon like ‘wind farm disease’. With similar side effects, which turns up where it’s been talked about on the local news. But not in other places in the same country with the same wind farms where it isn’t. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

All this makes it too easy to mock people for thinking they’re getting sick from WiFi or Wind farms. Or Wind farms with WiFi! But it’s important to realise they’re not crazy, the side effects are real, they’re just wrong about the source: all evidence points to the belief in electrosensitivy as the cause of electrosensitivity. Which means the news reports talking about these illnesses are spreading a kind of mind virus. And while these are exotic examples, there is also evidence that some allergies and asthma cases are nocebic and thus able to be spread in the same way. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

Last but not Least!

Just to be clear and make sure. If someone’s having an asthma attack, that’s not the time to tell them you know they’re being a drama llama because you read an internet article about the Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo They’re really having an asthma attack. And they really need something to make it stop. And that’s really not you showing off your knowledge. Nocebo Effect Reality or Voodoo

Harmful things aren’t harmful just because we believe they are. The right dose of arsenic will kill you as surely as an anvil to the head. No matter your insistence otherwise. But the nocebo effect does show that our beliefs about otherwise harmless things can make them harmful. At the gate a male guard is smoking a cigarette just in front of the sign “Correctional Unit for Drugs Addictions” and my mind goes “this is a contradiction, a big contradiction it even does not lack any thing like referential index”, just to abuse an NLP term, the abuse of dual standards, my newly invented term on the spot. By the way, serving time in Thai prison here is not like we are used to remember as prisons in our western culture. In the western hemisphere of the world, prisons are more like a hotel; these are places in Thailand you want to stay far-far away from. On the other hand, it is a great experience to see what is happening inside the walls. An opportunity I will not go let by. Rats Jail and Miami Vice.

We have to start at 9:00am sharp. As we approach the entrance, a female guard asks what the purpose of our visit is. My first impression of her is that she has the same looks as one of the bad guards of an early James Bond movie. “What is your business here, Mr Bond”, my mind goes. We have to handover our identification trough a metal gate. In slow motion I see my passport and visa go to a section that is beyond my powers to access now. Another guard is guiding us to a waiting room that is cleaned on the spot. Women walking in and out like busy bees, carrying the unneeded stuff out of the room. All that is left is seemingly the introduction of Ikea in prison waiting rooms.

At a sudden the door opens. The female version of Crocket and Tubbs walk in. “Did the channel change to Miami Vice in the Twilight zone” I think involuntarily. One putting car keys of a BMW on the table and the other, not saying a word, keeping her sunglasses on staring at me. Obviously they are here to guide a handcraft workshop with female inmates. There goes my presupposition of Crocket and Tubbs. I have to grin shortly realising my mind can make up wild stories within an instance. Rats Jail and Miami Vice.

 

Door after door

Again the door opens. A guard in uniform and 3-stars on the shoulder walks in. We have to follow her. The gate where we had to stick our identification trough the other side, now opens slowly. The door is more massively made of steel than my previous indication. Oui has a bag with a laptop and some presents for the prisoners. Baby powder with a scent. “Medai” the guard says. Cannot bring this into the prison.

As soon as I see it, my mind correlates “Powder, white, correctional-facility-for-drugs, hmmm, looks like ….” We have to leave the bottles with powder behind. It could be sold as a substance and even so, it could be a substance they could not check there. Lessons learnt, next time think better what you want to buy as a present. Oui’s bag is inspected thoroughly. We have to put all our electronic devices into a small safe. Oui gets a visitors badge. I go “Why do I not get a badge?”. “Are you a women?” Oui asks rhetorically. My mind goes: “Shit, missed that one.” Another door opens and a tremendous heat comes in. We start walking. Two guards, one with a stick and a high starred officer guides us to the location where we have to be. Rats Jail and Miami Vice.

 

Uncomfortable pick nick tables

A humongous area, with uncountable and the more uncomfortable pick nick tables, although this is not a pick nick area covered by a cheap cover against the rain, is all that is at our disposal. I am sitting at the right, in front of the stage. Around one hundred women are being guided to listen to us. They sit down.

Some elderly to the right but most young ones to the left. It depends how you look at it. I sit sideways so I can view the stage, the audience but also the kitchen in the open air. The dishes are washed in a rhythm while cutting the vegies further on. It is almost making music with the most primitive instruments available. In a glitch out of the corner of my eye, I see something black approaching over the floor. Is it a pigeon? Is it a spider? No, it is a well-fed rat! Rats Jail and Miami Vice.

 

How much Time?

The beamer is connected. Gees Louise! How much time can it take? On the other hand, we have to be graceful for the fact that we are allowed to carry a notebook into the prison walls so we can show some video that is real, catching, and supports the story being told. An old beamer screen is held into position by two heavy plant-pots. An old desk takes care of the function to support the projector. One up one down, one sideways is the concept that is in my mind. Awaiting my time, I start waiting, listening to the environment that has so many things to tell. Rats Jail and Miami Vice.

It turns hot, freekingly hot. A woman serves me coffee, some water and cake, wrapped under cling film. At this point, around 30 women are staring at me. I have coffee and water, they have nothing but jet another story to hear on to. Unknown to me what their conviction is Oui starts talking and my Thai is not trained, I do Thai boxing anyway, my mind drifts off with her story. Seeing her silhouette against a white wall, holding her microphone. In front of that wall a large amount of barbwire. In front of that, the one I love, the one that is my wife, my Oui. Rats Jail and Miami Vice.

Opposite Sides

As the warmth has the opposite of cold, the same is true about an iceberg in the sea. You only see the top floating above the water. The same is true about our thoughts. As we think we have done our best our unconscious only just have started and warmed up. Starbucks on the way Home

We walk back the place were we came from and pass by Crocket and Tubbs at the woodman craft class. I still wonder which wood is crafted here. The walk back makes me realize these women here today will walk out here soon too. The same road we are walking now. As seemingly this road looks longer than the way in, I do not know why. The drive to get better, to be better and to improve day by day settles the knowledge that this only has been four hours in prison, makes me realize that there are a lot of good thoughts at this earth. It only depends which point of view you utilize. Are you the rat in prison kitchen or a person without a name without food outside? Active and Passive Verb Forms

In this article we will learn you some more about Active and Passive Verb Forms. Sentences can be active or passive. Therefore, tenses also have “active forms” and “passive forms.” You must learn to recognise the difference to successfully speak English.

Read the following sentences:

He is writing a letter. (Active)

A letter is being written by him. (Passive)

You will have noticed that the verb changes its form when the sentence is changed from the active voice to the passive voice. The passive form of the verb is constructed by putting appropriate auxiliary verbs before the past participle form of the active verb.

 

The Theory of Active and Passive Verb Forms

Active Form

In active sentences, the thing doing the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing receiving the action is the object. Most sentences are active. Active and Passive Verb Forms.

 

Passive Form

In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing doing the action is optionally included near the end of the sentence. You can use the passive form if you think that the thing receiving the action is more important or should be emphasised. You can also use the passive form if you do not know who is doing the action or if you do not want to mention who is doing the action.

English Slang and IdiomsI have a confession – sometimes I change the way I speak when I am in different environments.  Now, this isn’t such a terrible thing if the environment is my English Language classroom; it makes listening and understanding easier for elementary ESL students if I choose simpler words and speak slower than normal.  However, when I don’t want someone to understand me (maybe because I’m playing some sort of game), then I will say something like this:

Deez peeps ain’t followin’ nuttin’ I’s spittin’.

Roughly, I might translate this as:

These people do not understand anything I am saying.

English slang is something that varies from place to place – some English speakers might even find it impossible to understand one another with such huge differences in Conversational English.  In order to help you navigate these difficult waters, here is a list of some common slangs and idioms from American English:

Skimming is the art of reading quickly through a passage to get the general information, without reading every word. Practice this skill by reading academic material on your own, leading up to the test. Skim first and take notes on your understanding, then go back and read again in detail.
